3、).AccdingtorelevantestimatesthegreatestretirementwaveintheUSwilloccurbetween20102020at45percent(Davis2005).Recruitmentofthenextgenerationoflibrarianshastherefebecomeoneofthemostpressingissuesfregionalnationallibraryassoc

4、iations(ACRL2004).Despitetheincreasedawarenessoftheneedfeffectivewkfcedevelopmentsuccessionplanninginitiativesamonglibrarians(Hallam2006)notmanylibrarieshaveastrategicplantohletheimpendingretirementsoftheirstaffuntilthei

5、ssueappearsonthetopoftheiragenda.Althoughtherewerealsoreptsondownturnshrinkingofthejobmarket(Berry2003abHoltStrock2005CullenKavanagh2006)manylibrariesarestilldesperatelyseekingsuitablecidatestofilltheirvacancies.Despitet

6、heneedfnewbloodthejobmarketintheUSshowsthatentryleveljobsarerarewithroughly11percentwereopentonewlibrarians(HoltStrock2005).ThisrecruitmentdilemmacanbeconfirmedbythestatisticsofAmericanLibraryAssociationPlacementCentersi

7、nce2000(Figures12).Theyreflectatrendofdwindlingjobopeningstill2003aflatdemthereafter.Onthesupplysidethenumberofjobseekershasbeenrelativelysteady.TheplacementstatisticsasshownbytheannualsurveyoftheLibraryJournal，since2000

8、indicatearelativelystablesupplyofacademiclibrarypostingswhiletheirproptionintheoveralljobmarketisgraduallyshrinking(TableI).OneofthewryingfindingsfromarecentsurveyisthatwhilegraduatesarenotseeingLISprofessionalsretiringa

9、thighratesthephenomenonofmultipledutieshassuggestedthatsomeganizationsarebeingrequiredtodomewithfewerpositions.(Maatta2006)InAustraliathemarketdataindicatethatemploymentlevelsflibrariansdofluctuatewithfiguresf2000sitting

10、atabout12500thenpingin20012002toaround9500.Thefiguresthenpickupagaintothelevelof13000in2006.AsintheUSthesupplyofnewgraduateshasbeenquitesteadywithanannualaverageataround700(Hallam2006).Thecomplexsituationdescribedabovehe

11、lpstoexplainthelimitedchoicefemployersinrecentyears.Whilegreatresearchlibrariesarealsosufferingfromasmallnumberofqualifiedapplicantsintheirrecruitmentexercises(Berry2003ab)wecanimaginethedifficultiesencounteredbysmallrem

12、otelibraries.Inthe2008USGovernmentbudgetlibraryfundingwillbeincreasedtoUS$226millionrepresentinganincreaseofUS$15.5millionoverthefiscalyear2006(ALA2007).Theadditionalinvestmentonlibraryservicesinthisbiggestjobmarketflibr

13、ariansmayintensifythecompetitionfhumanresourcesinthefollowingyears.WiththeglobalizationeffectwemayneedtowatchouthowthejobmarketsofacademiclibrarianswillbeaffectedbymerobustdevelopmentofthelibrarysectintheUSA.Evolvingjobn
